Why this Blog?

Hi

I am Divya Purandar from Bangalore, India and currently living in the United States. I live in Portland, OR with my husband and a little brat who recently turned four. When I moved to the US two years ago, I was amazed at the public library system here and almost felt a child-like excitement on finding children's “Picture-Books”.Children’s Picture books with their vibrant and colorful illustrations thrilled not only the two year old but also his mom who felt as if she were reliving her childhood!!

Reading every day is an activity I enjoy with my son and thats my one-on-one time with him. I normally read to him just before his naptime after he is back from preschool and that is a great incentive for him to finish his lunch as quickly as he can. Not only my son, I too look forward to that time of the day when we both explore the colorful world of picture books.

We’ve come a long way since the days of board books and lift-a-flap books. One day I realized that he will soon progress into reading by himself and will no longer want to be read to. That’s when the idea of a blog came to me as I felt the necessity to chronicle our experience of reading various picture books together. This effort is more for me than my son as it represents a huge part of his early childhood that I would like to cherish for the rest of my life.

The name of the blog is inspired from a Kannada children’s book series called “ Dinakkondu kathe” by Dr. Anupama Niranjana which means “ One story a day”. I remember how my mom used to read and narrate the stories from the said book series. Thanks to her, she inspired in me a lifetime of reading.

The purpose of this blog is not to review a book in a strict sense but more of a personal account of how my son or I felt while reading a particular book.

  7. Divya, hello. A friend of mine writes children's books, Natasha Narayan. http://www.natashanarayan.com/ I just checked, and her books are available on Flipkart. I suspect Abhay's somewhat young for them now, but he might enjoy them a few years later. Hope you enjoy them!

    Best,
    Shruti
