One of my favorite authors of children’s books is Mo Willems, the brainchild behind the “Don’t let the Pigeon …” or the “Knuffle Bunny” series, besides several other books for early readers. So today when I came across his book in the library, I had to pick it up. Needless to say, I fell in love with this one too. His books are astonishingly original and are an absolute delight to read to kids. Today’s book was “Edwina, the Dinosaur who didn’t know she was extinct”! As the title goes, this is a story of a dinosaur named Edwina whose helpful nature makes her quite popular in town. Edwina is also famous for the delectable chocolate chip cookies that she bakes for everyone. Everyone loves Edwina; Everyone except Reginald who is determined to prove that Dinosaurs are extinct. He tries his best to paint the town red with his fliers and loudspeaker announcements on the truth about dinosaurs. No one bothers to even heed to his relentless harangues. No one except Edwina! Edwina is kind enough to pay attention to Reginald who seem to be at his convincing best that creatures like Edwina are most certainly extinct. Edwina remains quiet letting the ever persuasive Reginald have his say. She realizes that Reginald is right and dinosaurs are indeed extinct. At last, when it seems that Reginald may have hit a home run after all, Edwina bursts out of the room as she just doesn't care! Later it is seen that even Reginald does not care and enjoys Edwina’s chocolate chip cookies!! Abhay couldn’t catch the underlying meaning of the story, but this is something I would always want him to bear in mind. As long as you know what you are, you need not care about what the world thinks of you!
